Understanding Trauma and Its Impact

How Trauma and PTSD Affect NDIS Participants

Trauma is more than a difficult memory. For many NDIS participants, unresolved trauma can become a significant barrier to daily living, relationships, and independence. The effects of trauma and PTSD may include flashbacks, nightmares, emotional numbness, hypervigilance, difficulty trusting others, and avoidance of situations that feel unsafe.

Without the right support, trauma can:

• Reduce your ability to participate in community activities and social connections
• Interfere with sleep, concentration, and daily routines
• Increase feelings of isolation, particularly in regional and rural areas
• Heighten emotional responses or lead to withdrawal from people and places
• Compound existing disability-related challenges, making everyday tasks feel overwhelming

The important thing to know is that trauma responses are normal reactions to abnormal experiences, and with the right support, many people find ways to manage these responses and rebuild a sense of safety. If your NDIS plan includes Capacity Building supports under Improved Daily Living, you may already have funding to access trauma counselling.

Behaviour Support

What Trauma Counselling for NDIS Participants Looks Like

Trauma counselling NDIS support at Ararat Wellness begins with one principle: safety comes first. Before exploring difficult experiences, your counsellor builds a foundation of trust and stability. There is no pressure to share before you are ready. Every session moves at your pace.

Your counsellor takes time to understand your unique experience of trauma. They learn how it affects your daily life and which goals matter most to you. Together, you develop a personalised support plan aligned with your NDIS capacity building objectives. Sessions may include grounding techniques, emotional regulation strategies, and practical tools for managing triggers.

Our counsellors use evidence-based approaches well-suited to trauma recovery:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) helps you identify and gently challenge unhelpful thought patterns. You learn practical strategies to interrupt cycles of avoidance and hypervigilance
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) builds psychological flexibility. Rather than eliminating difficult feelings, you learn to make space for them while moving toward the life you want
  • Trauma-informed grounding techniques help you stay present when flashbacks or overwhelming emotions arise. These are practical tools you can use between sessions
  • Safety planning gives you clear steps to follow during moments of heightened distress, supporting your wellbeing outside of sessions

Types of Trauma We Support Through NDIS Counselling

Trauma takes many forms. There is no hierarchy of suffering. At Ararat Wellness, our trauma counselling NDIS service supports participants working through a wide range of experiences, including:

  • Complex trauma from repeated or prolonged exposure to distressing events, often beginning in childhood
  • Childhood trauma and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) such as neglect, abuse, family instability, or growing up in unsafe environments
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) following accidents, violence, natural disasters, or other acute events
  • Intergenerational trauma passed down through families and communities
  • Trauma related to disability experiences including medical trauma, bullying, exclusion, or loss of autonomy
  • Grief-related trauma where loss is complicated by traumatic circumstances

Not sure if your experiences count as trauma? That is okay. Our counsellors can help you make sense of what you have been through, without judgement. You can also read about our grief counselling or anxiety counselling for NDIS participants.

Our Trauma-Informed Approach

Being trauma-informed goes beyond offering trauma counselling. It shapes every part of how we work. Our approach is built on four core principles:

  1. Safety – Physical and emotional safety come first. You should feel safe whether at our Ararat practice or in a telehealth session from home
  2. Empowerment – Trauma often removes a person’s sense of control. Our counsellors restore your agency by involving you in every decision about your support
  3. Collaboration – You are the authority on your own experience. Your counsellor brings clinical knowledge. You bring the understanding of what you need
  4. Choice – You decide the pace, the focus, and the direction. If something does not feel right, you can say so at any time

This approach aligns naturally with person-centred NDIS planning. Your goals and preferences guide everything. Learn more about how NDIS counselling works at Ararat Wellness.

NDIS Funding for Trauma Counselling

Trauma counselling through the NDIS typically falls under Capacity Building – Improved Daily Living (Category 15). This funding helps you build skills and strategies that improve daily life, relationships, and community participation.

Ararat Wellness is a registered NDIS provider. We work with all plan management types:

  • Self-managed participants can choose us directly and manage their own invoicing
  • Plan-managed participants access our services through their plan manager
  • Agency-managed (NDIA-managed) participants access our services as a registered provider

Not sure if your plan covers trauma counselling NDIS funding? Our team can help you check. We also support participants who benefit from behaviour support alongside counselling, funded under Improved Relationships. For participants whose trauma intersects with early developmental needs, our early intervention services may also be relevant.

In-Person and Telehealth Trauma Counselling

Accessing support can be a major barrier, especially for people navigating trauma responses. We offer flexible options:

  • Face-to-face sessions at our Ararat practice in a calm, welcoming space. We also offer mobile and home-based visits across the Grampians for participants who find it hard to travel
  • Telehealth sessions via secure video call let you access trauma counselling from home or any comfortable location. Available to NDIS participants anywhere in Australia

For NDIS participants in rural or remote areas, telehealth removes the barriers of distance and travel anxiety. Many clients across Ballarat, Horsham, Stawell, and the Grampians choose telehealth for convenience and comfort. Read more about our online counselling for rural Australia.
