NDIS Group Activities Explained: Learn by Doing
NDIS group activities are small, planned sessions where participants build skills together. At Ararat Wellness, a shared activity like art or games is the way in. Along the way, you can practise communication, confidence and everyday living skills.
A group is a place to learn by doing. You might plan a Lego build, take turns in a game or talk about a film. Each small moment is a chance to practise a skill you can use at home, at school, at work or in the community.
Open to People Aged 15 and Over
Our NDIS group activities suit participants aged 15+ who want to build social and everyday skills. They may help if new places feel hard, or if you want to meet people and feel more at ease talking. Family members, carers or a support coordinator can help with a referral.
A group may be a good fit if you:
- Want to meet people who share your interests
- Have plan goals about communication, confidence or independence
- Feel unsure in big groups and want a quieter start
- Live in Ararat or the Grampians and want support close to home
Four Participants Means More Time for You
Every group has four participants, and that is on purpose. Less noise. Less waiting for your turn.
The person running the group can notice how each person is going and adjust the activity. It is also easier to get to know each other when there are fewer new faces.
Small groups leave room for your own goals too. One person may practise starting a conversation while another works on staying calm when plans change. In a group of four, both goals can get attention.

Your First Group Session Starts at Your Pace
Your first session is about settling in. You meet the group and try the activity in your own way. You can take things slowly and join in when you feel ready.
Want to know how your group runs, including days and times? Our team can explain it before you start. Then the choice is yours.
Ready when you are. Call us or send the Group Referral Form.
Social Skills Groups Built Around What You Enjoy
The activity gives everyone something to share, so conversation can come more easily. Examples of our social skills groups include:
- Art and Craft: make something with your hands while you chat
- Games: play together, take turns and make choices as a team
- Lego and Modelling: plan a build step by step and share ideas
- Movies: watch a film and talk about the story and characters
- Dungeons and Dragons (15+): create a story as a group and solve problems side by side
Groups change over time. Check our group activities program and timetable for current days and times.
NDIS Funding May Cover Group Activities
NDIS group activities may be funded through your plan, depending on your goals and what it includes. They are often linked to the Core budget for Assistance with Social, Economic and Community Participation. They may also fit the Capacity Building budget for Increased Social and Community Participation.
For group supports, the session cost is shared. The provider divides the hourly group price by the number of people in the group. Read more in the NDIS guide to support budgets and the NDIS pricing arrangements.
Not sure what your plan covers? Your plan manager or support coordinator can help you check. Our team can talk you through costs and funding before you join.
Support Close to Home in Ararat
Our NDIS group activities run from 64 High Street, Ararat. For many families in the Grampians, that means less time on the road. If you are unable to attend in person, secure telehealth is another way to take part.
Telehealth may not suit every person or group. We will talk with you about what works for you.
Ararat Wellness is led by Director Karen Ceccon. Karen is a counsellor and Advanced Behaviour Support Practitioner with a Master of Counselling. The wider team includes counsellors and behaviour support practitioners.

More Support Can Work Alongside Your Group
A group can be one part of a wider plan. Some people pair it with one-on-one NDIS counselling to talk through worries in private. Others work with our team on positive behaviour support at home.
People living with psychosocial disability may be interested in psychosocial recovery coaching. Not sure which supports fit together? Our team can help you work it out.

NDIS Group Activities: Questions Answered
What are NDIS group activities?
They are small, planned sessions where participants practise skills together through a shared activity. At Ararat Wellness, that might be art, games, Lego or Dungeons and Dragons. The activity gives everyone something to connect over. Along the way, people can work on goals like communication, confidence, teamwork and everyday living skills.
Who can join NDIS group activities at Ararat Wellness?
Our groups are for people aged 15 and over. They suit participants who want to meet others, practise social skills or work on goals in their plan. You do not need to feel confident in groups to start. We talk with you first about which group may suit your goals and interests.
Does the NDIS fund social skills groups?
It may. It depends on your goals and what is in your plan. Group supports are often linked to social and community participation funding in the Core or Capacity Building budget. Check with your plan manager or support coordinator, or ask our team before you start.
How many people are in each group?
Four participants. We keep numbers small on purpose. It gives each person time to take part and be heard. It also lets the person running the group adjust the activity. A small group may feel easier for people who find crowds or new places hard.
Can I join a group by telehealth?
Yes, if you are unable to attend in person. Groups meet at 64 High Street, Ararat, and secure telehealth is another way to take part. This can help people who live further out in the Grampians or who find travel hard. Telehealth may not suit every group, so tell us on your referral and we will talk it through.
How do support coordinators refer someone to a group?
Use the Group Referral Form on our website. Participants, families and carers use the same form. Once it arrives, our team will be in touch to talk about goals, group options and funding. Questions before you refer? Call or contact our team.
